The earliest references to hypnosis date back to ancient Egypt and Greece. In 2600 BC, the father of Chinese medicine, Wong Tai, wrote about similar techniques, and the Hindu Vedas, written around 1500 BC, mention hypnotic procedures.
The following are some frequently asked questions about hypnosis:
How does the subconscious accept hypnotic suggestions?
Hypnotic suggestions bypass the intellectual mind, called the "conscious," and zeroes in on the subconscious. When given a new suggestion that is within the bounds of a person's belief system and moral orientation, the subconscious mind accepts it literally as a new reality.
How does hypnosis help people?
The ability to reprogramme emotional attitudes and reactions is a latent talent within every human being. Hypnosis is the most functional and reasonable way to train life-long attitudes, rather than suffer a lifetime of emotional accidents the conscious mind is unable to change.
Can any person be hypnotised?
All people of average intelligence (unless there is some form of organic brain damage) can be hypnotised, if they are willing and do not resist. The depth of hypnosis varies according to a person's ability to respond - and the skill of the hypnotherapist. However, persons heavily under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs are usually unsuitable candidates for hypnosis.
Is hypnosis medically approved?
Yes. The British Medical Association adopted hypnosis as a viable therapeutic tool in 1958, as did the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association.
Is hypnosis dangerous?
No, not at all. The induction of hypnosis is never dangerous to the subject, although personal disappointments may arise because of unrealistic expectations or preconceived information. This is why I always take the time to explain the process to the client, and what hypnosis can and cannot do.
Are the results of hypnosis permanent?
Suggestions stay with some individuals indefinitely, others need reinforcement. The effects of hypnosis are cumulative: the more the techniques are practiced and post-hypnotic suggestions are brought into play, the more permanent the results become. The addition of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) techniques adds to the power and depth of the hypnosis and it's ability to help effect permanent change. Self-hypnosis training and reinforcement CDs/mp3s for home use can also provide additional help.
Will I be out of control in hypnosis?
No, never. At any time you wish to (or need to) you can exit the hypnotic state immediately. Neither are you, at any time, in the control of the hypnotherapist. My job is simply to ensure your well-being at all times.
Can I be made to do things I don't want to in hypnosis?
Emphatically not. If something is against your will, wishes or morals and you would not do it when fully conscious, you will not do it in hypnosis either. Remember, the hypnotic trance is a situation of consent.
